Nuclear Waste Services

Stand 1.353

Nuclear Waste Services (NWS) specialises in managing, treating and safely disposing of UK radioactive waste.
Geological disposal is internationally accepted as the best solution to deal with higher activity nuclear waste for the long term. NWS is tasked by government with delivering a Geological Disposal Facility (GDF) which is a nationally significant infrastructure project, lasting many decades and attracting multi-billion-pound investment.

A GDF is highly engineered, with a surface facility and tunnels and vaults between 200m and 1km deep underground, in rock that has been stable for millions of years, where the waste containers will be placed. Multiple engineered and natural barriers will work together to isolate the waste, providing protection over hundreds of thousands of years while the radioactivity decays naturally.

Nuclear Waste Services (NWS) is a subsidiary of the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority which is a public body, sponsored by the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero.
